Whenever I travel for work, I try to sneak in a bookshop visit—or three. So when a conference brought me to Augusta, GA, I made a beeline for the independent bookstore in town and pulled a small posse of fellow book lovers along with me. Five of us walked in; twenty-three books and several tote bags later, we walked out grinning like kids at summer camp. There’s something electric about entering a bookshop with friends. The “Ohh!”s and “Aahh!”s, the rapid-fire recommendations, the whispered “You have to read this”- it all echoed through The Book Tavern that afternoon. What’s insideThe Book Tavern offers a surprisingly robust selection for a one-shop town:
A note on the experienceWe chatted briefly with the owner during our visit, but what really stood out was the curation itself: thoughtful shelf selections, a mix of new and used finds, and a layout that invites you to linger. It’s the kind of place where you can easily lose an hour without realizing it. Would I go back?Absolutely. Great browsing is great browsing, and The Book Tavern delivers on selection, atmosphere, and the thrill of discovery. Augusta may only have one indie bookshop, but this one carried our group through an afternoon of pure book-lover joy. And in my world, few things top visiting an indie bookshop, except visiting one with friends. What I bought at The Book Tavern
